Tart cherry, Prunus cerasus, is a relative of the plum native to greater Europe and south-west Asia, first cultivated centuries ago in the Carpathian Basin for its sour fruit. It went into juice and pie long before anyone put it in a capsule. What brought it onto supplement shelves is its flavonoid content — the anthocyanins that give the fruit its deep red colour.
