Passion flower — also called passion vine, or maracuja — is a perennial of the genus Passiflora, native to the southeastern United States and South America and common in Texas, Florida, Brazil and Argentina. The flower runs about 10 cm across, five-petalled and fragrant, in white and purple-blue, and in warm enough climates it grows year round. Spanish missionaries gave it the name in the sixteenth century, reading each petal as a biblical figure, and they were also the ones who began taking the leaves, stems and flowers as a tea.
