Now Foods Charcoal Refresh Mint Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Gel comes in a large 181 g tube and delivers a daily clean with a sharp mint finish and a visibly brighter tooth surface. It suits anyone who has chosen to keep fluoride out of their oral care routine, and anyone curious about activated charcoal in a format easier to handle than loose powder. The large tube size makes it practical for frequent household use.
What is activated charcoal in toothpaste?
Activated charcoal is an ultra-fine carbon powder produced by treating plant sources such as coconut shells at high temperature, which opens a network of microscopic pores and gives it a very large surface area. In a toothpaste gel, activated charcoal acts as a mild polishing agent able to bind the pigment molecules that settle on the enamel surface.
Benefits of charcoal mint fluoride-free toothpaste
- Gentle surface cleaning: fine charcoal particles help lift the surface layer of food and drink residue from enamel.
- Brighter looking teeth: removing built-up coffee and tea staining lets the natural shade of the teeth show through.
- Immediate fresh breath: the mint flavour leaves a cool, clean sensation straight after brushing.
- Fluoride free: a fit for anyone avoiding fluoride by personal choice or on a dentist's advice.
- Smooth gel texture: spreads easily across soft bristles and reaches between teeth without a gritty feel.
- Large 181 g tube: enough for long stretches of twice-daily brushing, and for more than one person at home.
How activated charcoal works on enamel
Activated charcoal works by surface adsorption rather than chemical bleaching: its large surface area lets pigment molecules attach to it and rinse away, while the gentle friction of soft bristles lifts the biofilm that forms on teeth through the day. The distinction matters. Chemical whiteners react with pigments inside the enamel, whereas activated charcoal addresses surface staining only.
What sets this formula apart
The Now Foods formula pairs activated charcoal as the cleaning agent with mint as the refreshing agent, in a gel texture rather than an opaque paste, and without fluoride. The gel dissolves faster on the brush and reduces the gritty sensation associated with dry charcoal powders, while the large tube makes portioning simple.

Frequently asked questions
Does fluoride-free charcoal toothpaste whiten teeth?
Now Foods charcoal mint toothpaste works on surface staining left by food and drink, letting the natural tooth shade show more clearly. It does not alter the internal colour of enamel the way an in-office chemical whitening session does.
Can the charcoal gel be used every day?
Yes, Now Foods charcoal gel is made for daily use at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Heavy pressure while brushing is best avoided to protect enamel and the gum line.
Does activated charcoal leave a dark residue?
The gel looks dark while brushing because activated charcoal is in the formula, and the colour rinses away with water. Washing the brush thoroughly afterwards keeps the bristles clear.
