"Mashallah. Thank you for your honesty, the quality of your products and your courteous service — and for the regular gifts. I really benefit from the advice you give me whenever I buy from you. To me you are like a private clinic: you have something others don't — a consultation first, then the purchase. Honestly, many things have improved for me since I started dealing with you."

Hydrogen Peroxide, known as oxygen water, at 3% concentration comes in a 100 ml bottle, a clear aqueous solution for external use, used in cleaning superficial grazes and surfaces. The 3% concentration is the one recognised for household use, and anything above it belongs to industrial rather than skin applications. It is sought by anyone wanting a small bottle for the home first-aid cabinet or the travel bag.

What is hydrogen peroxide (oxygen water)?

Hydrogen Peroxide is a simple chemical compound with the formula H2O2, made of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms, exceeding water by a single oxygen atom that is the source of all its activity. It comes as a clear, colourless liquid and breaks down slowly into water and oxygen on exposure to light and heat. For that reason its solutions are bottled in opaque containers and kept away from light.

Properties of the 3% solution

  • Rapid oxidation: hydrogen peroxide behaves as an oxidising agent that gives up the extra oxygen atom on contact with a surface.
  • Visible foam: the rising oxygen bubbles mechanically lift whatever fine particles cling to the surface.
  • Clean breakdown: the compound ends as water and oxygen, so it leaves no lasting chemical residue on the surface.
  • Declared concentration: the 3% figure is the level recognised for external household use.
  • Practical volume: a 100 ml bottle covers intermittent use and shortens how long the bottle stays open.

How oxygen water works on contact

Body tissue and blood carry an enzyme called catalase (Catalase), whose job is to split hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen at very high speed. When the solution touches tissue or blood this splitting fires all at once, and the familiar white foam appears, which is nothing more than oxygen bubbles. Those bubbles have a mechanical effect, lifting dirt and lodged particles to the surface, and that is the reason for its use in the initial cleaning of superficial grazes. The end of the fizzing means the end of the reaction, and there is no benefit in prolonging exposure past it.

What sets this bottle apart

This bottle presents hydrogen peroxide at 3% in a 100 ml volume, and pairing a declared concentration with a small volume is deliberate. A hydrogen peroxide solution gradually loses strength after the bottle is opened because the breakdown continues slowly, and a small bottle is used up before that breakdown advances far. The 100 ml volume suits the home first-aid cabinet and the travel bag alike.

Who is this bottle for?

  • Anyone assembling a basic home first-aid cabinet.
  • Anyone wanting a small bottle for travel or for the car.
  • Anyone needing a solution with a declared concentration for external use.
  • Anyone who prefers a preparation that breaks down into water and oxygen with no lasting residue.

How to use

Apply a small amount of the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to a clean gauze pad and wipe the area around a superficial graze once, then leave the area until the fizzing ends and it dries. Do not repeat application on the same spot over and over, because oxidation does not distinguish between what is meant to be removed and sound tissue. Close the bottle immediately after use and keep it in a cool place away from light. Follow the instructions printed on the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Why does oxygen water foam on contact with skin?

The foam is oxygen bubbles released when the catalase enzyme present in tissue and blood splits the hydrogen peroxide molecule into water and oxygen. Intact, unbroken skin foams far less because the enzyme is not exposed at its surface.

Why is the bottle opaque?

Hydrogen peroxide breaks down spontaneously into water and oxygen, and light and heat accelerate that breakdown. An opaque bottle kept in a cool place slows the loss and extends how long the solution stays effective after opening.

Can the 3% solution be used in the mouth or the eye?

The 3% hydrogen peroxide solution is meant for external use on skin and surfaces; it is not to be placed in the eye and not to be swallowed. Any use inside the mouth is preceded by the treating doctor's decision.

Cautions

  • For external use only, and not intended for swallowing.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and rinse with plenty of water on contact.
  • Not to be used on deep wounds, burns or inflamed wounds without medical advice.
  • Not to be mixed with other cleaners or disinfectants, especially those containing chlorine or vinegar.
  • Keep out of reach of children in its original sealed bottle, away from light and heat.
  • Consulting a doctor is necessary in the presence of a skin condition or if the affected area spreads.
